1. Examples of censorship happening with Disney plus. What and why?
Disney has had to rethink some of their older movies specifically Song of the South where the movie was said to depict African Americans in a stereotypical and racist way. This forced Disney to either make an edited version or not upload it to their streaming platform Disney+ which they haven't done. Another movie which Disney wasn't allowed to be aired in China due to the fact that it showed death which Chinese censorship doesn't allow. However, after one of the people who were reviewing the movie began crying after watching it so they ended up releasing it to the public to allow it to be watched in China.
2. Examples of censorship in other countries (include in this, notes from our China censorship studies in last year's study notes)
Censorship in China is very restricted due to the Government not allowing many things to be shown in a movie in China. Some of these restrictions include death isn't allowed to be shown, any mockery or judgment of China or their government is not allowed at all. Due to all these restrictions, not many movies and TV shows make it to the Box office in China however when movies do make it through all the restrictions in China they end up making millions. This is because only a very few amounts of movies make it to the box office in china every year so people don't have much freedom of choice in the movie theatre. The Interview is an example of a movie that was canceled due to North Korea's strict policies and their fear of what might happen if they released the movie, reason was there was a scene in the movie that mocked Kim Jong-Un's Father and Sony feared the backlash.
3. Points for/against censorship as presented in this clip - should art be censored?
Censorship is put in place to protect people from the dangers of the internet and other media types as well as protecting children from accidentally stumbling onto restricted content however the argument is for movies and films that were made in the past which may seem racist and derogatory in today's society shouldn't be edited and censored due to the fact that it is almost removing a part of human history and by removing them people may not be aware of the mistakes of the past therefore possibly falling into the trap of making the same mistake. Just because the material might not be suitable doesn't mean it should be taken out of history completely
4. What are some issues around censorship in our modern world and how we are consuming media?
Censorship these days is becoming more and more prevalent and it becomes more of a regulated thing which the agencies who approve them see whether it's fit for the country or not rather than someone an adult being able to choose for themselves. This is what its like and instead of free choice we are given material which is seen to be suitable and there is no room for people to interpret for themselves
